It was fantastic to see all the children from 1st-6th Class take part in this event. Many complicated skip routines were taught and the children picked these up with great enjoyment and ease. It was also a treat to watch the demonstration on the final day.
We hope our school continue this healthy habit and look forward to more skipping to come

Here in Scoil Oilibhéir, we always encourage the children to live healthy and active lives. The general health and mental health benefits of activity are well documented. Scientific research shows that short periods of physical activity–even as little as 10 minutes at a time–performed throughout the day provide health benefits similar to longer periods of physical activity.

We have introduced various ideas over the last few years to help in this – Active Breaks during the school day, Yard Games, Danceathon, Skip-Hop, Cycle to School, Walk on Wednesdays and so on. We feel that the children are far more active in school and we are now introducing Active Homework on a trial basis.

On Thursdays, for the month of October,  the children of Scoil Oilibhéir will not be receiving any written homework! Instead, the children will be given some active suggestions that we are hoping they will complete instead of written homework. These will be basic movement activities that don’t require any equipment or expertise! We are hoping that the parents will help and encourage where necessary.

Our children returned to school after the holidays with a hop and a skip! All the children, from first class to sixth, participated in skipping workshops over the past few days. The workshops included individual skipping skills, partner skipping skills, double dutch skipping and long rope games and the children thoroughly enjoyed learning and practising some new skipping skills. Some of our children are already expert ‘skippers’ and others were quick to learn new skills and tricks. Our expert coach ensured that the children had a positive learning experience and many had the opportunity to demonstrate the skills that they learned. ‘Skipping Fever’ has taken over and the children are asked to bring their own ropes to school on Thursday so that they can skip at break time.

Senior infants and Rang 3 were the lucky ones today. They brought their wellies to school and were well prepared for fun in the garden at lunchtime.  They couldn’t wait for the bell to ring so that they could make their way to the play trail where they climbed on the dragon , balanced on the logs and ran freely on the grass! The children from the Health Promoting Schools committee were on hand to help the little ones. By the time the children returned to the classrooms they were rosy-cheeked and happy…and ready for work!
