Well done to all who were involved in the organisation of such an important fundraiser and of course to those who donated to such a worthy cause.

Here in Scoil Oilibhéir we have always had a very special relationship with parents, and indeed grandparents, who are after all the primary educators of their children. This special partnership has blossomed over the years and parents have given continued support to every new initiative and project that the school has undertaken in order to enhance the educational experiences of our pupils. The Friends of Scoil Oilibhéir have been instrumental in harnessing the good will of our parent body and, as a result of their fundraising events, Scoil Oilibhéir continues to provide a wide – ranging and enjoyable education for all of our pupils. We held a very special ‘Thank You’ event today so that parents and grandparents could come and view the school and see where their money has been spent and how their children have benefited from their unfailing support and generosity. Parents, and extended families, visited the school this morning and were given a tour of our newest facilities and equipment. Having been entertained by the School Choir and the School Band parents then had the opportunity to see our children play in the new garden and playtrail; they visited our wonderfully stocked new library ‘Tír na Sí; they observed children working on newly purchased iPads and they also visited the polytunnel where children have been planting and tending to summer vegetables and flowers. Parents were then invited to visit the classrooms where they observed their children at work and were treated to some songs, rhymes and drama. The visit concluded with a sociable ‘cuppa’ – kindly provided by the Friends of Scoil Oilibhéir. What a lovely way to thank parents who are always so willing to support the school and to play such a vital role in their children’s education.

Today saw the long awaited opening of our new school library, Tír na Sí…. and what a day it was! Children and staff drew out all the stops and dressed up as their favourite characters from books so there was many a Harry Potter, Wally, Cinderella, Red Riding Hood (to name but a few!) to be seen in the classrooms this morning.

Our invited guests joined us in the Halla, where Mrs Cronin told us  how the library was set up, and they were entertained by our school choir and the children of Ms Barry Murphy’s class. As the children sang our school song the guests and our school librarians made their way to Tír na Sí for the official unveiling of the plaque. The guests were then shown into the library where Mr. O’Brien presented our librarians with their library pins. Some of very talented pupils showed them their artwork and read poems which thet had written themselves.

All in all it was a wonderful day and huge credit goes to all involved in the setting up of such a valuable school resource. Mrs Cronin deserves special mention as she has spent many hours planning and organising so that this day could be a very special one. The library is stocked with books of every kind and we know that our children will benefit for years to come.

Well, it was back to school with gusto this week after the Easter break and we are looking forward to a very busy term ahead.

Our sixth classes are making final preparations for their ‘big day’ on April 23rd when they will receive the sacrament of Confirmation. It is an exciting time for these boys and girls and they are working hard with their teachers to ensure that everything runs smoothly on the day.

We will have a very exciting day on Friday next, April 20th when our school library, Tír na Sí, will be officially opened. What a marvelous facility this is for the school – the children have the opportunity to choose from hundreds of books and to relax and read in comfort. Well done to all involved in the organisation of Tír na Sí….we know that it will bring pleasure to all of our children for years to come.

Our hurling and camogie teams can be seen training every day in preparation for upcoming matches. We look forward to hearing some news of the competitions ahead. Our athletics team is also in training and looking forward to competing in the City Sports this term.

We have Sports for All day to look forward to and Art Oilibhéir will also be held during this term. Many classes will be going on Walking Tours and School Tours and we all hope to get out and about as the weather improves. All in all there is much to look forward to and we will keep you appraised of all events as they occur.

Our Student Council in Scoil Oilibheir is made up of 6 boys and 6 girls from our 5th and 6th classes.

They were elected by their classmates following an election campaign within each class.

The council are the voice of the pupils in our school. They meet regularly to discuss school affairs and to put forth ideas and suggestions from pupils on how to enhance life in Scoil Oilibheir.

They are excellent role models for younger pupils and are always available to help out at school assemblies and functions both inside and outside of regular school hours.

So far this school year they have been involved in our Book Fair, Open Night, Grandparents Day, Christmas Carol Service and have welcomed the Lord Mayor Councillor Tony Fitzgerald and his wife Georgina the Lady Mayoress to our school.

On March 15th the Student Council organised a cake sale for the whole school and raised €800.

They presented this money to teachers in An Droichead to buy extra resources and equipment for our pupils there.

We are very proud of our Student Council and their valuable contribution to life in Scoil Oilibheir.

There was great excitement in Scoil Oilibhéir this morning as the children awaited our monster raffle. The Friends of Scoil Oilibhéir were very busy getting everything organised before the classes came to the halla for the draw. The children waited with bated breath as Mr O’Driscoll showed them the big box of tickets…the children had made a great effort to sell the tickets so all were eager to win. First prize of a laptop went to Ross Kavanagh and the other top prizes went to Vicki Lehane, Niall Considine, and Hazel O’Neill. Congratulations to these and to all our other winners too numerous to mention.

Of course the prize that was most eagerly awaited was of course a trip to the Planet for the class who sold the most tickets……this prize went to Miss O’Connell’s fourth class – well done boys and girls for putting so much effort into making our raffle a success!

Well done indeed to all the boys and girls who sold the tickets and to all the families who supported our raffle. All the proceeds will be invested in IT equipment for our children, and in the development of our school garden and play areas.

A big thank you also to all of our sponsors and especially to the FOSO who provided Easter eggs for a raffle in each classroom today. Happy Easter to you all.
