Scoil Oilibhéir has a long history of producing quality basketball players such as Shane Coughlan, Roy Downey and Jordan Blount. Wednesday December 12th, saw some of our senior pupils follow in their footsteps by taking to the court at the National Basketball Arena in Dublin.

Along with our friends in Neptune Basketball Club, the children have been taking part in Basketball Ireland’s Junior NBA Programme. Over 40 children have been receiving coaching on Fridays from Neptune’s Victory Scholar Justus Melton and a lucky selection got the chance to travel to Dublin to represent Scoil Oilibhéir at the Festival of Basketball in Dublin. This took place in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. As part of the Junior NBA, we were presented with playing gear from the Minnesota Timberwolves!

There were nearly 30 schools in attendance from every corner of Ireland. Former NBA star Ronny Turiaf was also there to encourage the children and to help them enjoy their day. Our children played really well and were a credit to themselves and the school. They played some great matches, took part in skills challenges, filmed an interview for NBA tv and learned about healthy eating.

Sincere thanks to Justus, Lehmon, Jodi and Ger from Neptune, to the parents for dropping their children to Scoil Oilibhéir at 6.45 am, and finally to Ms Patricia O Brien and Mr O Driscoll for all their work before and during the big (and long!) day. A day to remember for all.

The boys and girls from Mr Brosnan’s 5th class visited nursing homes last Wednesday as part of Mrs Kelly’s annual Christmas Cart Initiative with Red FM. The Red Patrollers came to say hello to Mr Brosnan’s and Mrs Kelly’s classes before escorting the children to the Red FM bus. Rang 5 were waved off by the two 2nd classes, the 5th classes, their teachers, Mrs Horgan and Mr O’ Brien. They visited the residents of Glyntown Care Home, Powdermills in Ballincollig and St Luke’s in Mahon. They met many lovely ladies and gentlemen in the nursing homes and even taught the nurses how to do the floss! A lovely lady called Patsy was so happy to see them that she gave them homework off. A huge thank you to Mr Barry’s class, Mr O’ Driscoll’s class, Ms Collins’ class, Mr Brosnan’s class and Mrs Kelly’ class 2nd class for making beautiful cards for the elderly. We would also like to thank Ms Mahony’s Sr infants and Ms Stoke’s 3rd class for making some extra cards in case we were short! Each and every card and gift was greatly appreciated and a great day was had by all!

Science Week came to Scoil Oilibhéir with a bang…literally! Children took part in a variety of experiments in the halla that emphasised the scientific language and skills of observing, predicting, questioning, investigating and showing results. Our budding scientists, i.e. The Student Council, led the way by conducting themselves impeccably as they demonstrated each experiment with great attention to detail. We hope that everyone makes an extra special effort this week to take part in scientific activities as part of Science Week.

It was fantastic to see all the children from 1st-6th Class take part in this event. Many complicated skip routines were taught and the children picked these up with great enjoyment and ease. It was also a treat to watch the demonstration on the final day.
We hope our school continue this healthy habit and look forward to more skipping to come

Over the last few weeks Ms O’Mahony’s Senior Infants have been having great fun in school. We have been sharing our favourite books with the class, taking trips to Tír na Sí (the lovely library) and dressing up in our brilliant new Aistear Room. We really enjoyed doing some autumn art and chilling out for Mental Health week with some meditation and bubble blowing. To top it all off we got to wear our bright amber and yellow colors on the yard for Friendship Week and drew some lovely chalk pictures. We are looking forward to the midterm break for a well deserved rest after such a busy time in school. Check out the photos to see what we’ve been up to!

Our annual Friendship Week has begun here in Scoil Oilibhéir and this year, the boys and girls are doing something extra special to kick off their week. Our pupils and their teachers wore Amber today to promote positive mental health and to celebrate the importance of friendship. Throughout the week, each class will have the opportunity to decorate the school year with positive quotes and doodles. We took photos of our artists at work today and look forward to taking many more throughout the week! Well done to the students and their families for promoting such a happy and important cause!
