The Tour de France paled  in comparison to the marvellous day of cycling that we had in Scoil Oilibhéir today. The day began early as the children, accompanied by parents and teachers, gathered at the Glen in readiness for the cycle to school. All decked out in high vis and helmets the cyclists made their way up the hill and entered the school to cheers and applause.

During the day we had a cycleathon where all those with bikes, infants to sixth class, had the opportunity to cycle around the school and to enjoy being cheered on by their school mates. There were lots of yellow jerseys, ‘maillots jeunes’, to be seen pedalling across the school yard as the ‘peloton’ made its way around the course. The fun did not end there – what should appear in the school yard only the icecream van!! Lots of exhausted cyclists sitting on the grass and enjoying a nice cool treat….what a fitting end to a wonderful day!

The West End came to the North End of Cork when the pupils of 4th class put on a performance in front of a VIP guest audience including Mr. O’Brien and Mrs. Horgan. Pupils wanted to highlight the work that Cill Bara does in helping children to reach their potential and the play, which took the form of a school reunion, was a triumph!  Well done to all the pupils involved; you should be very proud of all your hard work. With such talent on display, the bright lights of Broadway beckon!

This morning we welcomed a very special visitor to the school. Our past pupil Emma Murphy (Rang 6 2014), who is a member of the All- Ireland winning Cork minor camogie team, came to visit bringing with her the Sighle Nic an Ultaigh Cup. This was a historic win for Cork as it was our first victory since the inception of the competition and Emma played a key part in the win. Emma is also a key member of the Glen Rovers senior camogie team. She was hugely influential in their reaching the County Final last year and was rewarded with a club All Star for her efforts.

Our pupils gave Emma a great welcome back to the school today. We are all very proud of her and we wish her and her team mates well in their endeavours for the rest of the season.

The pupils of Scoil Oilibhéir skipped to school today with even more than their usual enthusiasm……. a day of fun and games lay instore. The younger pupils made their way to the playground in Kempton Park while the senior pupils headed off to The Glen. The little ones also had a bouncy castle….what more could you want?! The morning was spent getting active and every child enjoyed taking part in a huge variety of activities. All trooped back to school ‘tuirseach traochta caite amach’  but smiling after a great day of fun. The Friends of Scoil Oilibhéir came up trumps yet again – not only were they on hand to help during the day but they made sure that every child got a drink and a treat before going home. Many thanks to them for their great support and thanks also to the many parents who accompanied us on the day.

Here in Scoil Oilibhéir we have always had a very special relationship with parents, and indeed grandparents, who are after all the primary educators of their children. This special partnership has blossomed over the years and parents have given continued support to every new initiative and project that the school has undertaken in order to enhance the educational experiences of our pupils. The Friends of Scoil Oilibhéir have been instrumental in harnessing the good will of our parent body and, as a result of their fundraising events, Scoil Oilibhéir continues to provide a wide – ranging and enjoyable education for all of our pupils. We held a very special ‘Thank You’ event today so that parents and grandparents could come and view the school and see where their money has been spent and how their children have benefited from their unfailing support and generosity. Parents, and extended families, visited the school this morning and were given a tour of our newest facilities and equipment. Having been entertained by the School Choir and the School Band parents then had the opportunity to see our children play in the new garden and playtrail; they visited our wonderfully stocked new library ‘Tír na Sí; they observed children working on newly purchased iPads and they also visited the polytunnel where children have been planting and tending to summer vegetables and flowers. Parents were then invited to visit the classrooms where they observed their children at work and were treated to some songs, rhymes and drama. The visit concluded with a sociable ‘cuppa’ – kindly provided by the Friends of Scoil Oilibhéir. What a lovely way to thank parents who are always so willing to support the school and to play such a vital role in their children’s education.

Having trained hard with Mrs O’Bric and Mrs Traynor they were ready for the big day. As always the competition was fierce but our pupils gave their all and did themselves proud on the day. Many came home with medals and trophies but to us they are all winnerS. Well done boys and girls!
