Basketball Ireland

Scoil Oilibhéir has a long history of producing quality basketball players such as Shane Coughlan, Roy Downey and Jordan Blount. Wednesday December 12th, saw some of our senior pupils follow in their footsteps by taking to the court at the National Basketball Arena in Dublin.

Along with our friends in Neptune Basketball Club, the children have been taking part in Basketball Ireland’s Junior NBA Programme. Over 40 children have been receiving coaching on Fridays from Neptune’s Victory Scholar Justus Melton and a lucky selection got the chance to travel to Dublin to represent Scoil Oilibhéir at the Festival of Basketball in Dublin. This took place in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. As part of the Junior NBA, we were presented with playing gear from the Minnesota Timberwolves!

There were nearly 30 schools in attendance from every corner of Ireland. Former NBA star Ronny Turiaf was also there to encourage the children and to help them enjoy their day. Our children played really well and were a credit to themselves and the school. They played some great matches, took part in skills challenges, filmed an interview for NBA tv and learned about healthy eating.

Sincere thanks to Justus, Lehmon, Jodi and Ger from Neptune, to the parents for dropping their children to Scoil Oilibhéir at 6.45 am, and finally to Ms Patricia O Brien and Mr O Driscoll for all their work before and during the big (and long!) day. A day to remember for all.
