We are students of Mrs Quinlan’s 4th class and we want to make a change in our school and homes!
We have learned about the effect of plastic on our environment, oceans and seas. We have seen and read about the terrible consequences of plastic pollution and in particular, of single use plastic. We decided that it is TIME FOR CHANGE! We asked our principal and teacher could Scoil Oilibhéir become a single-use-plastic free zone? And the answer is YES!
Did you know?
- It takes the average single-use plastic bottle 500-1000 years to break down in the earth.
- The equivalent of one dump-truck full of plastic is being dumped into our oceans EVERY SECOND of the day.
- 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans every year.
So, what can we do?
We propose that from September 2019, all students will be part of the lunch box challenge. This means that lunch boxes and drink containers must be washable and reusable. No need to double wrap food, just place directly in the lunchbox! Single use plastic bottles with NOT be allowed. We are all responsible for the plastic waste that we produce, and we must try to work together and declare a #WarOnPlastic.
We hope that you will join us in our quest!
